• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Savsandy -- A Good Thriller Can’t Miss : I thought I’d read everything Brad Thor has written but somehow I missed this one. Anyway, I’m glad I discovered it as I really enjoy the exploits of the Scot Harvath character. In “Act of War” Harvath is tasked with uncovering why six engineering exchange students were recruited, what is planned for them, who’s behind the operation, and what exactly is the end game? Harvath seems even more dangerous and less tolerant than usual of what he deems “politically correct.” And whether one agrees with his political views or not, his writing is first class in both style and substance. While “Act of War” is not quite as intricately plotted as some of Thor’s work, it still kept me swiping pages till well past bedtime. I’m aware some fans object to what they see as Thor’s “right-wing proselytizing” but let’s give credit where credit is due. The man knows how to spin a good yarn and isn’t that what fiction is all about? ( Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2018 )
• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joseph Harris -- ACT OF WAR IS A "MASTERPIECE" THAT MUST BE READ !!!!!!!!! : In Act of War by Brad Thor a hired Ivy League blue blood type known as an NOC, "non official cover" secret agent, is planted in China by the United States to uncover suspicious national security activity. When his peculiar death occurs The Agency calls in backup and discovers Snow Dragon, an operation in progress that brings with it darkness, cold, and death. As the Central Intelligence Agency investigates, Washington brings to light China's intention to reinvent the term, "the inferior can defeat the superior". Knowing the U.S. is too technologically advanced, China decides to abandon the rules of that make up traditional concept of warfare. Tactics of Chemical and Biological attacks that poison food and water, along with collapsing electrical grids are discovered to be carried out and deployed by a third party of terrorists employed by China. As a preventive move by the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense, two operations are formed, Blackbird and Gold Dust; code names given for the attempt to save America from unspeakable attacks. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Vintage Geek -- The story line is terrific. The pace was good and it did move ... : There is no question in my mind that this book could be made into a blockbuster movie. The story line is terrific. The pace was good and it did move along quite well. However, early on I read what I consider to be awkward grammar. "Whether to" used without a stated "or not" or another option to do something else. I think it's accepted usage now but I find it distracting. Do you agree or? • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alan -- It is a great read that also shows the humanity of our military ... : This book is a fast paced well scripted tale with just enough of a tinge of reality about the potential problems arising from China owning so much of our debt and the future of cyber warfare interlaced with today's immigration and border security issues that it is not a totally fanciful tale. It is well worth a read just for it's apt description of the crime family masquerading as a government while turning the entire country of The People's Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea) into a gulag that uses multi-generational punishment for questioning the regime. This is the forgotten abomination on the world stage. The book fictionally touches on a broad spectrum of internal and external political, military, criminal and humanitarian threats that are beyond the attention span of the citizenry but that require vigilance in a multi-polar and asymmetrical world. It is a great read that also shows the humanity of our military and the realistic difficult decisions that operators sometimes make on their own in pragmatic and apolitical ways that, with a few exceptions, is unprecedented among most of the world's military organizations. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew C -- Not as Much Action as Usual : Another solid Harvath book that kept me intrigued. This got 4 stars because it didn't have as much action as other books in the series. Felt like it was anticlimactic at the end as well. Plus I didn't understand what the North Korean mission contributed to the story since what they uncovered was eventually uncovered anyway. Nicholas aka the Troll seemed to be uninspired in this book. He usually he has energy and some sarcasm but in this book he didn't seem to. Ironically enough, this book still kept me entertained though. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2019 )
